Cedar Cottage

This generational home was remodeled to better suit the current owner’s needs while providing a modern update. We built two additions and created a more open floor plan while seeking to honor the home’s heritage.

This project was featured in Maine Home + Design.

Preservation

All of the wood in the original home was milled from cedar trees cleared from the property. We kept all of the original ceiling intact, even when adding dormers and altering the porch roof. We also kept the original floors, sanding and sealing them for a brighter and more contemporary finish. When we brought in new materials, we ensured consistency by using locally milled cedar and new floors that matched the existing aesthetic.

Purposeful additions

When we built the home’s two additions, we worked to create a home that better suited the owner’s needs. One addition houses a durable and functional mudroom entrance with a bedroom below, while the other houses four bedrooms, including a new master suite. We also converted a small, first-floor bedroom to create a cozy library hideaway and created a small office nook that overlooks the lake.

Repurposed materials

Because this is a generational home, we sought to preserve and repurpose materials from the original home wherever possible. Some of the newel posts from the original staircase were milled down to form the legs for the newly built hickory island, while the original island top became a functional bench in the new mudroom. We also repurposed cedar wallboard from a bedroom for the redesigned staircase and loft.

Vintage details

When we built all-new cabinets for the kitchen, we wanted them to look as if they could have been original to the home. They feature a decorative toe kick and have an unfitted feel. The cabinet color was inspired by a vintage saltshaker, and we carried this color into the mudroom for the doors. The mudroom also features durable, painted floors. We added vintage-inspired light fixtures throughout the house, and the first-floor bathroom features a vintage-style sink and mirror.
