EP Lakehouse

Located on Embden Pond, this home has been in the owner’s family for generations. Since the last major remodel for this home occurred thirty years ago, the homeowners wanted to update their home and create a camp retreat for their retirement.

This home was featured in the Spring 2022 issue of Maine Homes by Down East Magazine.

Structural Improvements

We improved the existing structure of the home to ensure that it would continue to last for future generations. We added new engineered wood siding, a metal roof, and replaced every window and door in the home. We also added a new mudroom wing and entry, as well as an upstairs bathroom, to meet the homeowners’ current needs. New cedar decks with glass-paneled railings provide unimpeded views of the pond below.

History Uncovered

We sought to preserve the history of the home, especially in the main living area. The pine floor is all that’s left from the original camp, so we refinished and whitewashed the floor, giving it new life and a fresh, bright appearance. We also uncovered floor joists that had been previously hidden by a sheetrock ceiling. We cleaned and painted these joists and added black joist hangers.

Small Space, Big Design

To maximize space in this small home, we opened up the main living space by taking out a wall and extending it into the home’s old sunroom. A steel beam kept this space open and airy. And although the home features a small galley kitchen, we maximized cabinet space and included an appliance garage on the counters to add even more storage. We also redesigned and rebuilt the tight staircase.

Cottage Details

For the mudroom addition, we eschewed standard-sized doors for 8 foot tall, tomato red French doors. These showstopping doors, painted to match the outdoor pendant light, provide a warm welcome to the home. Stained wooden brackets complete the mudroom’s cottage look. Blue tilework in the kitchen and master bathroom adds color to these utility spaces, while boat cleat drawer pulls are a subtle nod to the lakehouse feel. A handmade pinecone pendant light adds light and interest to the stairs.
